Sash Window Refurbishment

Refurbishing timber sash windows is more cost effective than replacing them. It’s worth remembering that older windows have often been manufactured using much better quality timber than is used today. We use an integrated bush pile that helps prevent draughts and enables both sashes to move more easily. By choosing to have your windows refurbished you will benefit from lower energy costs, reduced noise pollution, greater security and better looking windows. On this page we describe what we do when we refurbish a timber sash window at your home or business. We normally allow one day to refurbish a timber sash window and it’s very rare for any scaffolding to be required. On the day we arrive, we start by covering the working areas with protective dust sheets to ensure your home is protected, we then remove all existing parting and staff beads and then remove both window sashes (sashes are the window halves that slide up and down). Once this has been done we scrape and sand back the frame and sashes to remove old paint to expose the timber, we remove the old window furniture and the window pulleys (if needed) and replace the existing sash cord.

As part of the process we fill and sand again both sashes and the frame, tighten loose joints in the sashes and replace any loose or missing window putty. We also treat windows with wood preservative. The sashes and weights are then balanced and the window is refitted with new parting beads and staff beads. Integrated draught proofing strips are used when the windows are reassembled.

And finally, we fit new sash latches/locks, sash lifts, ring pulls and restrictors. We can also add additional security locks. Please ask us for details about additional security measures.

If there is any broken glass we can replace this on site when we are refurbishing your windows. We will also replace any rotten or damaged sections of your window, using Accoya® timber. Accoya provide a 50 year above ground rot warranty.
